Craig Cowber, air chief aboard the conventionally powered aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), operates primary flight deck control during the launch of an Alert Five aircraft as Kitty Hawk transits Tsugaru Passage as part of the 2005 Annual Bilateral Exercise (ANNUALEX) with the Naval Forces of Japan for self-defense. ANNUALEX focuses on improving military relations between the United States and Japan. The purpose of ANNUALEX is to improve bilateral interoperability and defend Japan against maritime threats and to improve capabilities for surface warfare, air defense and submarine warfare. USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), At Sea (November 12, 2005) - Cmdr. Craig Cooper, USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), Air Boss mans primary flight deck control during the launch of Alert Five as Kitty Hawk transits the Tsugaru Strait. The fifth warning is a five-minute response time to launch the aircraft from the cockpit. Kitty Hawk, the navy's only permanently deployed aircraft carrier, recently crossed the Tsugaru Strait as part of a bilateral exercise with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The 2005 annual exercise was designed to improve the ability of both forces to conduct coordinated bilateral operations in defense of Japan. About 8,500 members of the US Navy will participate in the exercise.
